Window guide

Vinyl windows

The most common Canadian replacement material: insulating, low-maintenance, and made here at scale.

What to know

  • Vinyl quality varies more than marketing suggests — welded corners and chamber count matter.
  • Dark exterior colours need a vinyl formulation rated for heat, or consider fiberglass.
  • Most Canadian replacement quotes you will receive are vinyl casements or sliders.

Why vinyl dominates replacements

Vinyl (uPVC) insulates well, never needs painting, and is extruded by a large Canadian manufacturing base. For a typical detached house it is the value default: good thermal performance, wide style availability, and installers who know the product.

How to tell a good vinyl window

Cheap vinyl is mechanically joined at the corners and uses thin walls. Better units are fusion-welded, multi-chambered, and reinforced in large openings. Ask whether the series is CSA A440 tested as a complete product, not just a glass claim.

  • Fusion-welded corners, not screws or corner keys you can see
  • Multi-chamber frame and sash, not a hollow box
  • Steel or composite reinforcement in sliders and large picture units
