Window guide

Awning windows

Top-hinged windows that can stay cracked in light rain — common in basements, baths and combo units.

What to know

  • Awnings pair well with picture windows in a combination unit.
  • They are not a substitute for an egress window in a bedroom unless sized and labeled for it.
  • Operators are similar to casements — parts availability still matters.

Where they belong

An awning hinges at the top and opens out from the bottom, so light rain is less likely to blow in. That makes them a natural choice over a kitchen sink, in a bathroom, or as the operable sash beside a large picture window.

Do not assume an awning meets bedroom egress. Opening area is often too small. If the room is a sleeping space, confirm the code path before you change styles.
